Disconnect

Nov 29, 2017

Once upon a time people weren't born into connectivity. They weren't surrounded by 4G and fiber, their social network was only as large as the amount of people they'd meet in person and searching for information meant phone calls and footwork.

We now have a generation that will never experience a time without connectivity, a generation not knowing what it is like to live a life not augmented by technology. Some of us still remember what it was like before the internet, before everyone had a computer or smart phone. A time before information overload, instant gratification, and near infinite avenues of escapism.

As one of the generations that experienced the "simpler" time and then matured alongside technology, there comes a point when you grow weary of technological progress. Every new leap, app or gizmo means something new to buy, learn and integrate into your life, further pushing aside the real in favor of the digital.

While it does enhance many areas of our lives and creates enjoyment or careers, after awhile you start to miss the simpler times. Remember when losing your internet connection for an hour would induce annoyance or anger, now you daydream of finding a time when you can disconnect from it all.

A time when you can walk away from the e-mails, from the notifications, from the symbiotic relationship with your devices. Dreaming of a time and of a place where you can finally find peace of mind, a true analog moment of clarity where you can hear your own thoughts and allow yourself to take stock of reality.

Can we still disconnect or is it too late.
